Try running mode3, a program included with the SVGAlib source, to restore
your console without rebooting. The problem may indeed be related to
drivers.

When working on a machine that has a card that necessitates using mode3, I
just enter that as part of the command line:

  program; mode3

You generally have to press Enter before you get text again.
