Hi James,

svgalib is still actively used. To what level it is *actively* supported is
hard to gage. Matan seems to be the main driving force behind it at the
moment but periodically someone we have not heard from before will announce
some new chipset driver.

Jay Link (also on this mailing list) wrote a book on svgalib (pretty good
according to the feed back), which I keep meening to buy and add to my
collection of books I will never get time to read.

Sometimes questions posted here on this mailing list get several responses
sometimes none at all. I obviously cannot speak for anyone else but
personally I only respond if I have the time AND I feel I can add something
worthwhile AND the question hasn't been covered well recently. Some
questions can easily be answered by just looking at the mailing list
archives and if the person asking the question hasn't bothered looking at
the achieves and the same question was asked recently by someone else, then
this annoys me and I won't bother responding. In general if someone starts
off by saying that they have tried the archive and they can't find an answer
or they are new to graphics and they cannot understand something then I will
be more inclined to make five minutes (provided I know the answer). I guess
others on this mailing list must have similar feelings.

If you're looking at simply putting and getting a pixel then yes svgalib
seems to be the simplest API available for linux. I looked at GGI once (a
few years ago) and was horrified by all the layers of abstraction (but hay
what do I know).

I use svgalib VERY successfully. It tends to give me a 3 times performance
increase over X11 for the same hardware (could be more if I were sloppy with
the X11 port of my software).

Regards
Sergio
