Hi,
I have tested GGI with some S3 chipsets : Trio64V+, Trio3D
and with Intel740
In all cases, it is pretty fast.
The best advantage is that you code for a general interface for a virtual
frame buffer with optimized clipping and Zbuffer routines,
so you don't have to mess with X window programming.
The Library takes care of the details of displaying on the target display!
Besides, you don't need to be root for running GGI applications
at full-screen!

The library senses if you are running in X window or at the console
and shows your graphics with full performance in a window or full screen.

There is also a project to implement a GUI on top of GGI with OpenGL
support!
It is called the Berlin project. I liked the support for anti-aliased
Fonts. (Which are not possible in X window).
In case some one miss X window, there is also an implementation of an
X server for the GGI.

One of the Screenshots is really amazing : imagine a Cube that you can
rotate with the mouse, in which there are GGI X servers and
GGI applications running and displaying simultaneously on each face!
Beside that, GGI supports multi-head or multiple Video cards and monitors
In a short phrase: GGI is a paradise for graphics Geeks!
:-)
bye!
