Okay, I tried vbetest and mode3 from the 19981020 svgalib on my V2100, strace results are attached. Also, note that their were errors when building vbetest and mode3. These are the same as I had before. They are documented in the file errors, also included. The effect was the same as before--mode3 just froze (and I was able to suspend it and get a command prompt back), and vbetest just blanked the screen.
