Could you tell us more about the system config, type of CPU, speed of CPU, speed of system bus, type of graphics card, type of linux distribution, amount of RAM, svgalib version, (anything else you might consider pertinant e.g. running poyray in the background). I gave it a try on a 650MHz PIII notebook on both fbdev and X11. The X11 test ran noticibly faster. However both tests were very encouraging and I was plesently surprised. Under fbdev I noticed that the images took much longer to load than under X11 and looked grainy in comparison. I assume that under fbdev this browser is reducing the colours used by the image and taking its time doing it. When viewing a previously viewed image there is no time lag (the image appears instantly). The executable I built is quite small yet it works on fbdev, X11 and in a text console. I suspect there is room for optimisation. When accessing a remote web server over a slow link, I found a page would be rendered several times while it was downloading. Perhaps waiting until the page has been fully downloaded would speed things up. It would be interesting to see this browser running side by side on a slow and fast machine to see if the speed of the machine is the critical factor or if it is idling somewhere.
