I got a report of this problem from Andreas Kies, with an explanation:
svgalib reads all 256 bytes of pci configuration info, of which the
first 64 bytes are defined by pci specs and the rest are device
specific. Apparently some devices (the mentioned SCSI controller), don't
like to have those bytes read.

The problem is fixed in the latest (25/09) pre release of 1.4.1, by only
reading the first 3 words of every card, which are needed for
identification, and reading the rest only of the vga card.
